English Cocker Spaniel: Characteristics, Personality and Care
The English Cocker Spaniel is the direct descendant of D’Oysel dog, used at bird hunting in England and France, during the eleventh century. Now, this breed is also very popular as a pet, as he is very loyal and energetic.
If you want to know more about the characteristics or personality of an English Cocker Spaniel, but also how to take care of him, here are some of the most important things:
English Cocker Spaniel: General Characteristics and Personality
A medium height dog, the English Cocker Spaniel has short legs, a gentle look and he is strong and agile. The soft, medium-length fur is straight or slightly wavy.
Besides being very energetic, the English Cocker Spaniel is also a very enthusiastic, happy, obedient, well trained and loyal dog. He likes to run a lot or just to play outside with people, adults or other animals.
Therefore, he is perfect for children too or for families who already have other pets.
As he still has those hunting instincts, he likes to learn and apply new things so give him new tasks to do every day.
English Cocker Spaniel: Health and Care
The life expectancy is 12-14 years. He generally has a good health, but see a vet occasionally just to check everything is all right.
Like any other dog, he tends to have some health problems that need your attention. Among the diseases he is more prone at: eye diseases (atrophy cataracts, progress to blindness), skin diseases, epilepsy or hormonal system diseases.
Being so active, you shouldn’t ignore this part too. He needs to run freely in the park, or in the courtyard, to give him small exercises or just to walk him outside, several times a day.
If you have a courtyard, his place would still be in the house, just let him go outside whenever he wants.
The fur has to be brushed 2-3 times a week.
